In a time when most performing artists replicate themselves in form and feel,Hanah Jon Taylor emerges as one of the most inspired musicians on the contemporary music scene. A native of Chicago, Hanah has received the critical acclaim of audiences and media throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia Minor. His unique and lyrical persona on flute,saxophones and wind synthesizer has warranted him as a true innovator of improvisation.
With a career spanning over 30 years, Hanah has appeared with songwriter/folk artist Richie Havens, singer/songwriter Nina Simone, Infinite Spirit Music with Soji Adebayo and Light Henry Huff , Everyday Heroes with percussionist Steve McCall and bassist Rafael Garrett, the Colson Unity Troupe, saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell, Italian pianist Antonello Salis, French pianist/composer Jobic LeMasson, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble with Edward Wilkerson and Kahil El-Zabar, the Maghostut Trio with Malachi Favors and Vincent Davis and The Great Black Music Ensemble, conducted be Mwata Bowben. Mr. Taylor is a veteran member of The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM).
In 1986 Hanah co-led one of the first avant-garde jazz ensembles to perform in Havana, Cuba, at the 2nd annual Peoples' International Music Festival. He was recognized by Chicago Artists Abroad as a fresh entity of the Chicago jazz community and awarded grants in 1987 and 88, sponsoring his first European tours as a bandleader.
In 1990 he was commissioned by the University of Chicago to organize and direct its first improvisational jazz orchestra. Hanah holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Design and a Master of Science degree in Music Therapy from Southern Illinois University, where he studied with designer R. Buckminster Fuller and woodwindist David Riddles. He also received coaching from saxophonists Pharaoh Sanders in Chicago and Steve Lacey in Paris during the early part of his European experience.
Presently, Hanah is a member of the faculty at Madison Media Institute, a college for media arts, in Madison,Wisconsin. He is also the Co-founder and Artistic Director with Kwumba Renaissance, a community Artists initiative.
His recordings appear on Rouge Art Records(paris) and Fish-Eye Records(USA). His next CD entitled "HYRPLASIS" is schedule for release in 2009.
